Rofiat Imuran at Aston Villa: What Arroyo’s Exit Means for the Super Falcons Defender
Aston Villa Women have parted company with Natalia Arroyo, leaving Super Falcons defender Rofiat Imuran under a new interim coaching structure at the English Women’s Super League club.
Aston Villa confirmed the managerial change on Tuesday, with Brian Sørensen taking interim responsibility for the first team while the club considers its next steps.
The development is of particular interest to Nigerian football fans because Imuran joined Aston Villa from London City Lionesses during the summer transfer window.
Aston Villa Part Ways With Natalia Arroyo
Arroyo’s departure comes after a difficult opening to Aston Villa’s 2026/27 Women’s Super League campaign.
Villa’s latest league match ended in a 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, following a run that had left the team without a league victory.
Before the Tottenham defeat, Aston Villa had recorded two draws and one defeat from their opening three WSL matches.
The results left Villa near the bottom of the league table and prompted the club to make an early coaching change.
Arroyo had been appointed in January 2025 and helped Aston Villa retain their WSL status during her first season in charge.
Her departure now leaves Sørensen with temporary responsibility for the team.
Brian Sørensen Takes Interim Charge
Brian Sørensen is already part of Aston Villa’s women’s football structure.
He works as the club’s Women’s Technical Advisor and previously managed Everton Women.
His existing knowledge of the squad means he can immediately begin preparing the team while Aston Villa considers its next permanent head coach.
For now, however, Sørensen should be described as the interim coach, rather than Aston Villa Women’s permanent new manager.
What Does This Mean for Rofiat Imuran?
The coaching change creates a new situation for Rofiat Imuran at Aston Villa.
The Nigerian defender joined the club from London City Lionesses during the summer and is competing for a place within the Villa defence.
A change of coach can lead to new tactical ideas and different selection decisions. However, it does not automatically mean that Imuran will become a regular starter.
Her immediate opportunity is to show the new coaching staff what she can offer.
The main things Nigerian supporters should watch include:
- Whether Imuran makes the matchday squad.
- How many minutes she receives.
- Whether Sørensen changes Villa’s defensive structure.
- Where Imuran fits into the new tactical system.
- Whether she can establish herself as a regular WSL option.
Rofiat Imuran’s Aston Villa Move
Imuran’s transfer to Aston Villa represents another stage in her European football career.
The Nigerian defender previously played in France before moving to England and later featuring for London City Lionesses.
Her experience in the Women’s Super League means she already knows the demands of English women’s football.
At Aston Villa, the next challenge is establishing herself within a squad that is now adjusting to another change in coaching leadership.
For the Super Falcons, regular club football would also provide valuable competitive experience for the defender.
Aston Villa’s Next Match
Sørensen’s first opportunity to assess the squad comes quickly.
Aston Villa Women are scheduled to face Newcastle United Women in the Subway Players’ Cup on Wednesday, 30 September 2026.
The match is particularly interesting for Nigerian supporters because it could provide an early indication of whether Imuran features under the interim coach.
However, her inclusion and playing time should only be reported as confirmed once the official team news is released.
Why Imuran’s Club Form Matters to Nigeria
Rofiat Imuran’s development at Aston Villa is also relevant to the Super Falcons.
Nigeria has several players competing outside the country, giving the national team access to experience from different European leagues.
Regular club football can provide players with opportunities to develop their tactical understanding and experience against high-level opposition.
For Imuran, establishing herself at Aston Villa would therefore be an important part of her continued development.
